Fig. 11. Some fig growing areas are having problems with a virus that attacks the root system and bottom of the fruit. The popular variety Masui Dolphin is grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks taken from the experiment stations collection. Fig. 12. Cuttings being rooted in foam blocks Fig. 14. Figs grow in plastic bins where it is easier to measure moisture, root growth and fertilizer absorption. Black straps are used to support verticals that are heavy with fruit. Verticals are spaced at 50cm. Each produces about 20 figs. Fig. 15. Black straps supporting verticals. Even spacing helps to facilitate harvesting, Fig. 16. Older trees are also grown in bins for farious tests. Note where versicals are cut each year. When multiple shoots appear, only the outermost is left to grow to a height that will produce about 20 figs. Fig. 18. Split figs are sold as A grade. B grade is off color. Production figs are sold in packs of similar weights. Sized S,M,L and 2L, they are sold in units of 500 grams, about 1 pound 2 oz. Average retail is about $5.00 for the box.
